How to extend Child Benefit claims
You can do this by extending your claim online or through the HMRC app.
You’ll get a letter through the post with a handy QR code that takes you straight to the GOV.UK page, or simply search ‘extend Child Benefit’ and log into your account.
Please note: if you don’t let HMRC know by the deadline of 31st August 2025 whether your child is staying in full-time education or approved training after 16, your child benefit will automatically be stopped from that date.
What counts as full-time education or training?
Your child must be in full-time, non-advanced education or approved training, i.e. A-levels, Vocational Training, or university-level. It must be at least 12 hours per week.
You can check eligibility here on GOV.UK
Child Benefit charge for High-Income parents
Even if you have opted out of receiving Child Benefit because of your income, you still need to extend your claim.
Why? Keeping your claim active helps protect your National Insurance credits and ensures your child is automatically issued an NI number at 16.
Income thresholds have changed
The High Income Child Benefit Charge now starts at £60,000 and goes up to £80,000.
You can see how much you might get, or owe, by using the online Child Benefit tax calculator.
Consider opting back in
If you previously opted out due to income, it may be a good idea to opt back in to payments, especially with the new thresholds. You can easily do this online or through the HMRC app.
