As we move into Self Assessment season, HMRC is reminding everyone to stay alert to scam emails, texts, and calls claiming to be from them.

At this time of year, fraudsters often target taxpayers with fake tax refund offers or urgent payment demands, all designed to steal your personal information.

We know it sounds scary, so it’s important to remember the following:

HMRC will never
đźš« Ask for personal or financial details by text or email
đźš« Leave voicemails threatening legal action or arrest
đźš« Tell you about a refund over the phone

If something doesn’t feel right, take a moment to pause and check.
âś… You can forward suspicious emails to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk
âś… Text scams to 60599
âś… Report scam calls via GOV.UK

We’ve written a blog post that breaks down how to tell if a phone call, email, or letter from HMRC is genuine. You can read that here.

Mistakes can be make when you’re in a rush. So, to further avoid risk, file your tax return early. This not only helps you avoid the last-minute whirlwind to get it sorted, it also allows you to take time and spot any scams when they might appear.
