Ever found yourself saying “I just need a day” but having to go to work anyway?

Whether that be to catch up on life admin, look after a loved one, covering childcare arrangements, spending some much-needed time in the sunshine (while we have it) or needing a mental health day at home, we all sometimes need that time to allow ourselves to bring our full selves to work again the following day.  A reset is sometimes key.

This is why we welcome Whyfield’s once-a-year duvet day, something we brought in early on in business as a benefit to our staff. Not necessarily what it sounds like, but if you want a day with your duvet, that is also allowed!

To put it simply, it’s annual leave with a twist: no request, no handover planning, just a little flexibility when you need it most. The only thing we ask is to be mindful of meetings and deadlines, other than that, the day is yours.

How does this work?

If you’re thinking of introducing your own duvet day (or as some call it, a GSD day (‘Get Stuff Done day’) here is how it works:

  • Call the office at the start of the working day and say you would like to take your duvet day
  • We check to make sure there are no urgent deadlines, client meetings, or other timely things in your diary. If you do, we can discuss cover.
  • …and that is it. The day is yours.

What is the reason behind this?

Sometimes, you don’t realise you need a day off until the moment it arrives. So, as much as we plan our lives, making sure we are productive and always there for our clients’ needs, when we can’t bring our full selves to work, it could be time to have a reset day.

A reset can mean something different to anyone. But it’s important that we recognise when we need that day, and have the opportunity to use it whenever we need (or want) to.

Late-night emergency? Covered

Unexpected house guest? Covered

Just need a day without the rest of the house to catch up on things that are taking up brain space? Covered

We know the value of a planned annual leave, but we also know that life doesn’t always run on a schedule. A duvet day offers the freedom to step back, recharge and come back feeling more like yourself, without the stress of lost pay or making up hours.
